Karma Sinks Lions in Montreal?

September 13, 2009 By Brian Wawryshyn

Do you believe in Karma? Well, I am sure that fans of the Montreal Alouettes do today, after their club snatched a victory from the BC Lions in the final minute by a score of 28-24 in front of the 91st straight sellout at Molson Pervical Stadium in Montreal.

Last weekend a league error robbed the Als of a touchdown that would have potentially tied the game, but this week there would be no question, as Avon Cobourne crossed the goal line with 50 seconds left on the clock to put the Alouettes ahead to stay.

The game was the story of two halves, with the defenses on both teams dictating the tempo in the first half, and the offenses taking over in the second to make for an exciting game that went down to the wire for the second straight week.

The Lions started off well, with an interception by corner Dante Marsh on the Als first drive, but the offense couldn’t take advantage of the play, and the teams traded punts for the first quarter, and Lions kicker Sean Whyte hit the upright on a 27 yard field goal. The two teams entered the 2nd quarter scoreless.

The Alouettes opened the scoring at 8:53 of the second quarter after a 5 play 72 yard dive culminated in an Anthony Calvillo completion to Jamal Richardson in the end zone to give the Als a 7-0 lead, the teams would three field goals, two by the Als that would see the score 13-3 Montreal at the half.

In the second half the Lions started things off with a bang and a turnover, sacking Anthony Calvillo and setting up great field position for the Lions. The Lions would strike on the next play with Jackson hitting former Alouette O’Neill Wilson in the end zone to make it a three-point game.

The Lions got closer when Larry Taylor bobbled a punt that was recovered by Jason Three plays later, Grice-Mullen scored on a one-yard reverse at 3:37 of the fourth.

Then on their very next possession, the Jarious Jackson hit Geroy Simon on a 43 yard catch and run, and the Lions has a 24-20 lead late in the fourth. The Als got what would be an important single off a Duval punt, and then facing a second and long on their own 29 yard line, Calvillo found a wide open Kerry Watkins on a 56 yard strike that would set the stage for the Als to complete the last minute comeback.

Wally Buono agreed, that was the key play of the game. ““I thought the big thing was making that key play on second down,” said B.C. coach Wally Buono. “I think if we could have stopped them there, the game would have been ours.” said Buono, who missed a chance to set the all-time CFL coaching record in his home town in front of friends and family.

Mark Trestman wasn’t so sure how much last weeks result helped his club.

“This game had nothing to do with vindication or getting our just desserts,” said Trestman. “This was a team that got off the plane and worked very hard this week.

“They played hard and we played hard and we were fortunate enough to win.”

Extra Yards:

  • The loss denied Buono a chance to become the most successful coach in CFL history. He remains tied with Don Matthews at 231 career victories.
  • The Als held Martell Mallet, who had a team-record 213 rushing yards last week to 66 yards on 14 carries.
  • Jarious Jackson completed 16 passes for 228 yards, including 128 yards on seven catches by Geroy Simon.
  • The Lions wore their retor uniforms for the the second time this season, both times on the road. It sure would be nice if the hometown fans got a glimpse of them at BC Place.

Lions turnover win to Riders

July 4, 2009 By Brian Wawryshyn

(Regina, SK) The BC Lions were in a generous mood Friday night, and handed the Saskatchewan Roughriders a 28-24 victory at Mosaic Stadium at Taylor Field on Friday.

Buck Pierce fumbled four times and threw two interceptions under constant pressure from a Rider defense that was seemingly having it’s way with BC’s new look offensive line, which often seemed confused with picking up the blitz giving Pierce little time to look down field allowing 9 sacks. Walter Stith showed that he is a work in progress replacing Rob Murphy, while Dean Valli also had a tough game at times. These deficiencies will need to be addressed or Buck Pierce will end up on the injured list in no time.

The Lions picked up key injuries as well, the most concerning being to running back/kick returner Ian Smart. Smart pulled up lame on a carry and looked to have popped a groin the way his body language was suggesting. Promising newcomer Emmanuel Arceneaux, who had a TD catch on the night, left the game with an apparent shoulder injury. The Lions got big scare came when Omar Morgan rolled up on the leg of Geroy Simon, bending the star receiver’s leg in a way it shouldn’t bend. Simon laid on the turf grabbing his leg but walked off under his own weight and thankfully returned to finish the game.

The loss of Smart left the return game in shambles and Darren Toney looked lost filling in for the CFL’s former special teams player of the year.

On a promising note the Lions defense looked pretty decent at times. Ryan Phillips picked off two Darian Durant passes and took one back for a touchdown, and the front four got decent pressure most of the night, registering three sacks and would have had a bunch more had Durant not been so agile and thrown the ball away on other occasions. Javier Glatt had a strong game for the Lions at linebacker, and Korey Banks looks as though there will be some exciting moments coming from him at his new nickleback position.

The Riders didn’t do themselves a lot of favours trying to win the game. They added turnovers of their own, and almost gave the Lions the win in the dying moments when Ryan Grice-Mullen was wide open deep but dropped the ball. Durant went 18-32 for 313 yards, 0 TD’s and 3 interceptions. 154 of those yards were to star Weston Dressler who served notice to the league he is quickly becoming the premier receiver in the CFL.

Footnotes:

  • The Lions have lost out on the Jamall Johnson sweepstakes as the former Lions linebacker signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Sad that an NFL tryout costs the Lions a good player, who may have had a bigger role here had he not left. The Lions apparently exchanged contract numbers with Reggie Hunt while in Regina, and will now explore the possibility of adding him or JoJuan Armour.
  • With the injury to Ian Smart the rumored signing of RB Tyler Ebell could be finalized this week, or perhaps junior star Andrew Harris will dress. Martell Mallet had some promising carries, and looks to be a similar type of runner as Joe Smith.
  • Former Lion Jason Clermont finished the night with 1 catch for 9 yards, while former Rider Anton McKenzie registered 6 tackles, 1 sack and a forced fumble.
  • If Emmanuel Arceneaux can’t go Friday, we’ll likely see the other promising receiver in camp, Terence Scott get his chance to shine.
  • Lowell Ullrich has more in a nice video blog he composed after the game in Regina. You can view it here.

Lions fall to Stamps in Pre-Season Opener

June 17, 2009 By Brian Wawryshyn

Calgary, AB – The BC Lions finally got to hit someone in a different jersey Wednesday night when they visited the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium.

The Lions offense started out slowly going scoreless in the first have and not moving the ball. While the Stampeders didn’t exactly light up the field, they did end the first quarter with a 6-0 lead. Henry Burris finished the night 3-7 for 42 yards, 0 TD’s and 0 interceptions. Calgary scored on their continued possession to start the second half on a 12 yard scamper by QB Barrick Nealy thanks to a great ball fake and open-field deke, giving the home side a 13-0 lead early in the 2nd quarter.

With Wally Buono not satisfied with what he saw from Buck Pierce in the first quarter, he left his starter in the game and Pierce finally put together a nice drive featuring receiver Greg Hetherington who hauled in a 12 yard touchdown on a seam route to cut the lead to 13-7. Pierce left the game 7-10 for 77 yards,1 TD, 0 interceptions and one turnover (fumble).

The Lions chipped away a little bit more after they recovered a Barrick Nealy fumble on a botched hand-off at the Calgary 30 yard line. Sean Whyte kicked a 23 yard field goal to make the score 13-10.

Jarious Jackson went to work in the second half and put together a nice drive with passes to Terence Scott and Martell Malllet and appeared to score the go ahead touchdown on what looked to be a great catch by Otis Amey. But upon video review it was determined the catch was not made and the Lions had to settle for a 26 yard Whyte field goal and the game was tied 13-13. But a last minute drive by Calgary and a 28 yard pass from Drew Tate put the Stamps 1st and 10 on the Lions 9 yard line. They punched it in on a 4 yard reception by Jermane Jackson and the Stamps led 20-13 at halftime.

Jackson started the 2nd half but couldn’t muster any offense and he eventually gave way to Zac Champion. Jackson finished the game 6-14 for 77 yards, 0 TD’s and 0 interceptions.Calgary’s Drew Tate capped off a nice 66 yard drive which featured a 50 yard catch and run to Jermaine Jackson. Tate punched it in from the 1 yard line to give the home side a 27-13 lead. But Champion directed the Lions to a major after a 4 play 32 yard drive that ended with a 4 yard pass to Emmanuel Arceneaux, to bring the Lions within 7 at 27-20. After a 49 yard Sandro DeAngelis field goal made it 30-20 and the Lions replied with a 41 yard effort by Whyte, the Stamps struck again with a 2 play 99 yard drive which saw Matt D’Orazio connect with Jabari Arthur to put the Stamps up 37-23.

Travis Lulay entered the game with just over eight minutes remaining in the 4th quarter, and orchestrated a nice drive, which ended with a nice throw to new slot-back but long time veteran Lyle Green and the Lions were once again within 7 points.

With 42 seconds remaining the Lions got the ball back and Travis Lulay engineered a fantastic drive all the way down to the 14 yard with 5 seconds left but on the final playover threw his intended receiver and the Stamps held on for the win.

Standouts: WR Greg Hetherington: 4 catches for 54 yards and 1 touchdown. WR Terence Scott: 5 catches for 92 yards. DT Jeremy Gibbs 3 tackles, 1 sac. DE Ceasar Rayford: 3 tackles, 2 sacks and one fumble recovery. QB Travis Lulay: 8-13 106 yards and 1 touchdown.
