Dolphins Snap Up Grice-Mullen

January 7, 2010 By Brian Wawryshyn

Ryan Grice-MullenThe Miami Dolphins are quickly becoming known as Lion poachers, as for the second time this off-season and third time in the the last two, they have plucked a player off the Lions roster. It was announced today that receiver/returner Ryan Grice-Mullen will join teammate Rolly Lumbala in Miami this year. Both will be reuniting with former Lions star Cam Wake. Both will have to make the roster, but barring an early cut, the Lions will be without their services at training camp and to start the season.

Grice-Mullen started the season at wide receiver for the team, but was in and out of the lineup with inconsistent play. He really started to develop as a kick returner in the second half of the season, and that skill-set was no doubt what attracted the Dolphins to take a look.

Grice-Mullen joined the Lions during the 2008 season, and only played in a few games, before assuming a bigger role this year with the departure of Jason Clermont and the move of Paris Jackson to the slot.

Grice Mullen had 20 receptions for 210 yards and a 10.5 yard average last season, while contributing 43 punt returns for411 yards and a 9.6 yard average and 47 kick returns for 1099 yards, and a 23.4 yard average. His longest kick return was 73 yards.  Lowell Ullrich of The Province reports that Grice-Mullen and Lumballa both received minimal signing bonuses which would make them easy cuts. But so did Stefan Logan last year who went on to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers and set a team record for returns in the process.

Rolly Lumbala Signs With Dolphins

January 5, 2010 By Brian Wawryshyn

For the second straight off-season the Miami Dolhins of the NFL have plucked a player from the roster of the BC Lions. CTV Sports is reporting on Twitter that fullback and special teams player Rolly Lumbala has signed a contract with the club.

Lumbala had just completed his second season with the Lions and is in his option year. His role with the Lions has been mostly on special teams, and no doubt this is where he will attempt to stick with the Dolphins. It will be Lumbala’s second try at making the Dolphins. He was cut by Miami before joining the Lions two years ago.

The option-year signing period began Monday and outstanding Winnipeg Blue Bombers rookie defensive back Jonathan Hefney wasted little time signing with the Detroit Lions.

Lions Return To Empire in 2010

Conceptual Drawing of Empire Field
Conceptual Photo of Empire Fields: BCLions.com

The BC Lions announced plans for their temporary home on Tuesday, and to no ones surprise it will be located at the old Empire Stadium site at the PNE.

“Empire Fields” will consist of 20.100 seats, with an additional 7,400 bench style seats in the endzones for a seating capacity of 27,500.

The facility will be enclosed on all four sides and the sideline seating will be covered. A limited amount of private boxes as well as concessions, media facilities and washrooms will also be constructed. There was no indication if the fields itself will consist of grass or field turf on the clubs official release on BCLions.com.

Lions president George Chayka likes what he’s seen so far.  “After one look at the conceptual drawings I believe our fans will be very impressed with what we have in store next year.”

The builder of the project will be Nussli, a leading, international supplier of temporary structures for events, trade fairs and exhibitions. The time table for construction of the facility will be aproximately 10 weeks and will require a crew of 50-60 people to get the job done at a cost of $14 million dollars to be paid for by PavCo, the organization that operates BC Place stadium.

The original Empire Stadium
The original Empire Stadium

Many Lions fans have longed for a return to the outdoors, and this year they will get their wish. The old Empire Stadium was a multipurpose stadium that formerly stood at the Pacific National Exhibition site at Hastings Park in Vancouver. It was originally constructed for the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games and sat 32,375 upon opening, but 30,229 after 1974. The Lions called it home from 1954-1982, and the venue played host to the first Grey Cup game held west of Ontario in 1955. Empire Stadium also hosted the Grey Cup game in 1958, 1960, 1963, 1966, 1971, and 1974. It was the first stadium in Canada to go with a manufactured playing surface in 1970.

With the reduced seating capacity, Lions tickets will be a hot item in 2010. You can make sure you’re part of this historical year in BC Lions history by purchasing your season tickets today. Give the Lions a call at 604-589-ROAR and get ready for outdoor football in 2010!

Lee ready to join Leos?

October 1, 2009 By Brian Wawryshyn

Province writer Lowell Ullrich is reporting that Lions first round draft pick Jamall Lee may be ready to revisit signing with the club, after exhausting his NFL options:

A club source said Wednesday the agent for the 22-year-old running back, Zeke Sandhu, called the CFL team late Tuesday seeking to re-open contract talks which fizzled after Lee was cut early last month by the Carolina Panthers.

The Lions no doubt would have liked to have gotten their hands on Lee a little earlier, but the idea now would be for him to join the team for the rest of the season and get that experience under his belt before next year’s training camp. A season ending inury to non import fullback  Alexis Bwenge has created the perfect spot for lee on the roster.

Buono has high praise for Lee’s abilities in the article, stating:

“He could be the next Russ Jackson,” said Buono, referring to the Canadian-born player who was switched from defensive back to quarterback and led the Ottawa Rough Riders to three Grey Cup victories in the 1960s “We’d get him ready,” Buono said of Lee. “He gives you options and we would like to examine all of them.”

Stay tuned…
