CFL Fans Fight Cancer Poker Night

September 27, 2009 By Brian Wawryshyn

poker2009header

For the past two seasons, BCLionsDen.ca and BC Lions fans have been active in promoting and raising money for CFL Fans Fight Cancer. An unofficial charitable organization of CFL fans from across the country. With groups based in BC, Manitoba and Ontario, our efforts have raised thousands of dollars for cancer related causes within our local communities.

CFL Fans Fight CancerI’d like to invite you to join us for a fun evening of  Texas Holdem poker and help raise money for the BC charity of choice, Hannah’s Heroes. Hannah was the daughter of a high school friend of mine. Hannah passed away on Oct 31, 2006 at age 5 from a rare brain stem tumor called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, DIPG. Following her passing, the family created the Hannah’s Heroes Foundation to fight cancer in her name.

Following her daughter’s passing, Hannah’s mother Kathie, my high school friend, also passed away from a battle with cancer.

Our event will take place on Saturday, October 17th. As usual this tournament will be graciously and generously hosted by Brian and Sheila Scarr at their home in Langley. There are 24 spots available in this elimination tournament that will start with three tables, and end up with a final table. The entry fee is $50.00 with half of the money going directly to Hannah’s Heroes and the remainder going into the prize pot, a possible $600.00

The final two will have the say as to how the tournament ends. They can play for the pot or come to a mutual agreement and split the pot any way they see fit.

Door Prizes:

  • Pair of bronze tickets to a 2009 BC Lions regular season game.
  • CFL Fans Fight Cancer Tshirts.
  • Signed Geroy Simon Photo courtesy of InTheTunnel.com.com
  • Signed player cards of Krey Banks and Dante Marsh courtesy of InTheTunnel
  • Autographed Buck Pierce BC Lions third jersey with pro-stitched numbers (size large) courtesy of our friends at Sports & Stuff in Chilliwack.
  • More prizes to be announced!

Spots usually fill up quickly, so if you can join us please e-mail me for more information and to register for the tournament.

Report: Jarious Jackson could be done for the year

September 17, 2009 By Brian Wawryshyn

Radio station CKNW is reporting that quarterback Jarious Jackson could be done for the season with what is speculated to be a torn rotator cuff on his throwing shoulder.

The Lions have neither confirmed or denied the report, saying only that Jackson had underwent an MRI Thursday. Jackson has missed the last two days of practice and Buck Pierce will get the start Saturday against Toronto.

Pierce’s injury woes are well known and he’s coming off a break after suffering his second concussion of the year before the bye week.

Jackson’s injury means Zac Champion will likely be added to the active roster, and speculation will now begin if a phone call could be made to former Lion Casey Printers, who has yet to find a new home after being released by the Hamilton Tiger Cats. Buono has never ruled out bringing Printers back to the club where he had his most success, winning the leagues most outstanding player award in 2004.

August 19, 2009 By Brian Wawryshyn

As a CFL fan, sometimes you feel a little miffed at the lack of CFL merchandise available to you. Well be frustrated no more CFL fans, because Rick and Wendy, owners of Sports & Stuff in the Chilliwack Mall have what you’re looking for, and if they don’t there is a good chance they will order it for you.

This Saturday, Sports & Stuff will be hosting it’s annual Football Day. Martell Mallett, Jarious Jackson and Brent Johnson of the BC Lions will be on hand to sign autographs and pose for pictures, and there will be great deals on merchandise. Everything from jerseys, to key chains will be available at great prices for CFL fans. Mention you’re a BCLionsDen member and get a further discount!

There are also a ton of prizes to be won, including:

  • Trip for 2 to Calgary to see the Lions and Stampeders. Includes airfare/hotel/tickets/taxis to and from airport.
  • Autographed pro-stitched Jarious Jackson jersey.

BC Lions Fan Tailgate Parties are back!

July 8, 2009 By Brian Wawryshyn

Well, after a stressful couple of weeks wondering if many of us had attended our last BC Lions tailgate party, I am pleased to announce that a deal has been reached with the City of Vancouver, as well as the Easy Park group.

First things first I have send a huge than-you to Vancouver City Councillor Andrea Reimer. She spearheaded this with the Easy Park representatives and without her we wouldn’t be making this announcement today. I also want to thank Greg Watrych and Mel McKinney and the folks at Easy Park for giving us this opportunity to continue this great pastime we all love.

The Lot we will be using is located on the north east corner of Quebec and Terminal. It is across from the skytrain station, and beside McDonalds (Image below) and there are some rules we MUST abide by should this be allowed to continue.

  • All cars in the tailgate lot must use one spot and must pay for that spot by purchasing a ticket from the meter in the lot. DO NOT buy tickets from street people.
  • Parking stalls are available on a first come, first serve basis.
  • All garbage must be bagged and secured in vehicles prior to departure for the game, and must be taken home with you to dispose of. Bring extra garbage bags. There are no exceptions to this rule.
  • All barbecues must be attended at all times, and a fire extinguisher must be present at the tailgate. If you have one, bring one. NO CHARCOAL BARBECUES ARE PERMITTED.
  • There shall be no “public” bathroom use of any kind. All tailgaters must find an appropriate washroom to use.

I’ll be at the lot early on Friday to begin setup. I’ll have extra supplies on hand for those tailgating newbies, but if  you can bring the usual, cups, garbage bags and be prepared to take your garbage with you, that will be great. I look forward to seeing the regulars and maybe a few newcomers. Come on out and join us and ROAR YOU LIONS ROAR!

I’ll also have CFL Fans Fight Cancer shirts for sale if you would like to support that cause!

The lot is located on the northeast corner of Quebec and Terminal:
