From The Stands – Lions 37 Stampeders 13 (Preseason)

June 21, 2014 By Brian Wawryshyn

740X300-FTS-2014-1

Preseason or not, Friday’s game versus the Calgary Stampeders was going to be a measuring stick for the BC Lions and their fans to see what they had heading into the 2014 season. If what fans were treated to on a beautiful summer night is going to be the norm this year it could be a special season of BC Lions Football.

It was great to back in the lot at Tailgate Empire, where the attendance was just as impressive as the 26,445 who took in the Stamps and Lions. It was like a big reunion after a long season and the regulars cooked up a storm while discussing what was in store for the club in 2014. The tailgate culture has certainly taken hold here in Vancouver, and many fans have joined our initial group.

As for the game, it felt so good to be back watching football in BC Place, with the roof open on a perfect night and the football did not disappoint if you were a BC Lions fan. For the Lions it gave them some very tough decisions to make on Saturday, a result of some stellar off-season scouting by Neil McEvoy and his scouting staff.

With new coordinators on offence and defence, one thing became clear very quickly. The 2014 BC Lions are going to attack you with speed. Speed at receiver, speed at running back, speed on defence, speed on special teams.

Using a limited playbook, the Lions played simple well executed football on offence and it was effective. Those who were leery about the Kevin Glenn trade had to leave convinced it was a brilliant move by Wally Buono to acquire the 35 year old QB. Glenn played with poise and confidence while his former teammates Drew Tate and Bo Levi Mitchell sputtered badly for the Stamps, leaving John Hufnagel no closer to a decision on who is number one will be on opening day.

Stefan Logan served notice that he will be a force this year. Both on a 93-yard punt return and out of the backfield. The dual threat of Logan and Harris should ensure that the Lions running game will in no way resemble the one that stumbled along at times last year.

At receiver the Lions look to have some options. Kory Williams had a strong game as did Courtney Taylor and Ernest Jackson, with Manny Arceneaux soon to return. Stephen Adekolu is going to give the coaching staff plenty to consider as the Lions appear to have some solid depth at non-import, check that; national receiver. It’s going to very interesting to see how the roster shakes down, and whether or not a roster player from last year doesn’t survive the final cut.

The offensive line was not really noticeable, and anytime that happens it’s a good thing.

On defence, Khalif Mitchell demonstrated the problem he provides for opposing offensive lines and the defensive line has the potential to be scary good, especially considering the linebackers they have behind them.

The Lions pursuit to the ball was constant all night long from whistle to whistle. In the secondary, coverage was outstanding for the most part. After getting burned for a touchdown early, TJ Lee was very noticeable in a positive way with two picks, three tackles and two knockdowns.

As for fan experience, it was nice to have Matt Baker of the TEAM 1040 doing in game commentary. Matt is a smart sports guy and he’s a fan of the CFL. He should be a nice addition to the in game production and provide some nice insights as the game unfolds.

It was nice to see a social media component on the big screen, with a display of fan tweets and photos during the game. Fans want to feel engaged and there is no better way to do that as well as grow your brand, than effective use of social media.

Still, I would love to see a campaign that fans want to gravitate to. The 12th man in Seattle, more supporters groups, formation of a “Lions Nation” if you will. It needs to be something original, yet make fans want to be a part of something special. I’m not sure if you’ve seen the Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl rings (In my opinion recent Grey Cup Rings are nicer), but they included the “12” logo as a tribute to the fans. The Lions have done a fantastic job with their off-season marketing but coming up with something to unite the fan community in this ways would be icing on the cake and would take the brand to new heights.

All in all it was a great night of football, which likely created a long night for those who decide the roster, but this fan left feeling pretty optimistic about what the Lions could be in 2014.

Lions lose two good ones in McKenzie and Archibald

March 28, 2014 By Brian Wawryshyn

As Lowell Ullrich pointed out on the The Fifth Quarter, the Lions took another hit to the depth of their leadership group with the retirement of Ben Archibald and the release of LB Anton McKenzie.

There is a re-tooling happening in BC, and it looks as though the Lions are looking to become a younger more aggressive team in 2014. To be sure there is still plenty of leadership in the Lions locker room after today’s losses, but when you throw Korey Banks and Angus Reid into the discussion, you can see why some are concerned.

Reid certainly feels the loss of Archibald will be a big one for the club, tweeting;

I'm not sure #BClions fans really realize what a HUGE loss @BenArchibald65 retirement really is. Both on and off the field. #leader #truePro

— Angus Reid (@angusreid64) March 28, 2014

The Lions do have some young talent coming on the offensive line which received a boost when 2013 draft pick Hunter Steward signed with the team. Kirby Fabien looked fantastic before his injury last season and the Lions will hope he comes back 100% for training camp. They’re also talking to the agent for 2010 draft pick Danny Watkins, who isn’t sure he wants to play football any more after toiling for a couple of seasons in the NFL.

But it’s going to have to be up to Jovan Olafioye, Dean Valli and Patrick Kabongo to be the leaders and guide the youth of a new look offensive line. Matt Norman enters his third season with the Lions and must have absorbed a ton of experience in 2013. There is no reason to expect he won’t continue to improve as the heir apparent to Angus Reid.

McKenzie’s loss will also be felt. The consummate team player, McKenzie was a solid option for the Lions in many situations. His play down the stretch in 2011 was outstanding and he was a big part of the playoffs that year. The writing was on the wall though and with Adam Bighill and Solomon Elimimian in the lineup and the addition of Jamall Johnson, the Lions can afford to go with a younger option to bring along.

While some are suggesting that the Lions may feel these departures when it comes to leadership, the fact is there are players ready to assume that role. Dante Marsh, Ryan Philips, Shawn Gore, Travis Lulay, Khreem Smith, Paul McCallum, Adam Bighill, Andrew Harris are all still here among others. One only has to point a young player in the direction of Marsh or Bighill to see what being a professional entails.

Leadership shouldn’t be an issue and as always, the decisions of Wally Buono will be judged in November. He usually gets pretty decent grades.

From the Couch: Riders 29 Lions 25

November 15, 2013 By Brian Wawryshyn

The BC Lions fought a good fight but in the end it was Darian Durant who put his team on his shoulders and led his Roughriders to victory. The Lions season is done, and they will be thinking about the one that got away for some time. Here is our final Lions game recap of 2013, From the Couch.

The Game

For three quarters it was the Lions that dominated the time of possession putting together three long and productive drives, chewing time off the clock and keeping the Riders offence shivering on the sidelines. The Lions showed the Riders looks they weren’t familiar with including a four man deep I-formation and you certainly couldn’t accuse the offence of being predictable.

The combination of Andrew Harris and Stefan Logan continued to have success while Travis Lulay looked to be on his game and confident. The offensive line played outstanding; pass protecting for Lulay and opening holes for Harris and Logan who built on their recent success racking up a combined 146 yards along the ground.

Defensively the Lions were containing the likes of Kory Sheets outside of one big run that set up a Rider score but it was Taj Smith and Weston Dressler doing the damage for the Riders. Smith stole a sure interception out of the hands of Josh Bell, then out-fought Dante Marsh on another deep ball following a questionable pass interference call just before the end of the half that kept a Riders drive alive. Dressler was Dressler, and when the Riders need him to get open he did with amazing ease. With those players keeping the Riders close, Durant then took it upon himself to lead the comeback in the fourth quarter.

Entering the final quarter with a nine point lead, the Riders noticed a vulnerability in the Lions defence and Durant killed them with draws up the middle, rudely reminding all that Solomon Elimimian was back in Vancouver nursing a hamstring injury that he didn’t feel would allow him to perform in the biggest game of the season. The offence dried up in the fourth and couldn’t muster any of the success they had for most of the game, the defence couldn’t get the stops and as a result, the Lions season is over.

Under Review

Every CFL fan can relate to the frustration of watching a game and tolerating CFL officiating and Sunday was no different. The Lions certainly weren’t on the favourable end of a few calls and that’s just the way it goes in the Canadian Football League.

The pass interference call near the end of the half, a very weak roughing the passer call on Durant on the same series and a curious decision by the command centre of the league on an apparent Lions touchdown all come to mind. These calls didn’t cost the Lions the game, but they also didn’t do anything to install confidence in fans who want to see the game decided by the players.

When I speak with fans around the league, it’s a constant topic that comes up. Officials have a very tough job, and I’m amazed at how many times they get it right at full speed, but we can only hope we won’t have anything to say about them in the final games of the year. Don’t hold your breath.

Where do they go from here?

Two exits from the playoffs for the Lions in the last two years will certainly mean changes are coming for the BC Lions and it may not be just player wise. The lack of consistency from the offence for the majority of the season has to be the focal point for the club moving forward, and it likely cost the Lions a home playoff game.

Despite what I felt was a great game plan by the Lions heading into the game on Sunday, I’m not sure it will be enough to save the job of coordinator Jacques Chapdelaine. Jacques has taken a lot of heat in BC over the years but the lack of a running game for much of the season may be the reason Wally Buono needs to go in a different direction in 2014.

I think that Mike Benevides will be back, but he will certainly be under pressure to return the Lions to the top of the Western division in a year when the Lions will be playing host to the Grey Cup. Of course it will be up to Wally Buono, Neil McEvoy and Roy Shivers to give him the team to do that and the Lions will have some tough decisions to make this off-season, beginning with who they leave exposed in December’s expansion draft.

Another question will be whether Travis Lulay will have surgery to clean up his problematic shoulder. He played like a warrior on Sunday, and injuries can never be predicted, but two seasons with the same problem indicate it should at least be considered. The Lions looked like a different team with Lulay back at the controls and they have to take every measure to make sure he doesn’t make it a shoulder hat-trick in 2014.

At 33 years of age, do the Lions bring back Stefan Logan? I hope they do, because I don’t think there is too much football mileage on that body. He provided a spark and a welcomed element to the Lions ground game and at the very least the Lions should be looking for a similar type back that can team up with Harris in the backfield and give them the same one two punch.

The offensive line will have changes as well and the Lions will need to hope that Kirby Fabien returns healthy. They seem to have an answer for replacing Angus Reid with Matt Norman, but the guard and left tackle positions need to be better. Defensively the Lions will be looking at an aging secondary and deciding whether they can get another year out of the group, while finding a way to start grooming others. The defensive line needs to be improved particularly at providing better first layer interior run support.

So it is over for another year. As always I will be heading to Grey Cup in Regina and hope to provide you with some insight from the festivities from the 101st edition of our great Canadian Football championship, both in this space and on BCLionsDen.ca and via Twitter, @BCLionsDen. My thanks to Lowell Ullrich and the folks at TheProvince.com for giving this fan a voice here and we hope to continue next year as Vancouver gets set to host the nation at Grey Cup 2014. Thanks for reading everyone, and enjoy the rest of the playoffs. Roar you Lions roar!
